Join us for an evening of food and drink, information, and global advocacy!

March 18, 2011

6:00 p.m.

Each year, the International V-Day campaign increases awareness by focusing on a specific group of women in the world who are resisting violence with courage and vision. In 2011, V-Day's Spotlight Campaign will shine on the Women and Girls of Post-Earthquake Haiti.

In collaboration with Suffolk University's Center for Women's Health & Human Rights and the Women's Forum at the United Nations Association of Greater Boston, we are proud to bring you an evening of expertise that will raise awareness on the most critical issues for women and girls in Haiti today.

The Spotlight will include a live PowerPoint presentation and panel discussion on the extreme levels of violence against women and girls in Haiti, and will focus on the increased rates of sexual violence since the devastating earthquake that took place in January 2010. We are proud to announce that the presentation will feature guest speakers Ms. Carline Desiré, Executive Director of the Association of Haitian Women in Boston, and Mr. Brian Concannon Jr., Esq., Director of the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti.

Suggested donations of $10.00 are welcome and will directly support a revolutionary national campaign in Haiti lead by a coalition of women activists, including longtime V-Day activist Elvire Eugene, that will address sexual violence through art, advocacy and legal services.

Join us and stand for the women and girls of Haiti this V-Day season!

About our Sponsors:

The Center for Women’s Health and Human Rights (CWHHR) at Suffolk University is the first academic institute in the United States to focus on women’s health and human rights in the social sciences, arts and humanities, and public policy. Founded in 2003, the CWHHR is committed to furthering the dignity and wellbeing of women and girls everywhere by exploring and extending the linkages between women’s health and human rights.

Dedicated to research, teaching, networking, and advocacy, we collaborate with other academic and community organizations working on these goals, bring together the community of scholars and activists already working in these areas, and provide expertise to a range of institutions developing the link between health and human rights.

Launched in June 2006, the Women's Forum at the United Nations Association of Greater Boston has become an active local community for bringing together women and men around global women's issues and programs that improve the lives of women and families in the developing world. We host events highlighting local and international organizations.

The primary activity of the Women's Forum is hosting events that highlight local and international organizations that work to promote women's health, development, human rights and overall empowerment.

The Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti has joined with grassroots groups in Haiti and international partners to launch the Haiti Rape Accountability and Prevention Project (RAPP) to respond to the epidemic of rapes against poor women and girls in Haiti in the wake of the January 12, 2010 earthquake. RAPP provides individual victims of sexual assault the legal services they need to obtain justice and compensation, while working with allies in Haiti and abroad to transform the social context that underlies the vulnerability of all poor Haitian women to assault. The Project also aims to deter future rape by punishing the perpetrators and forcing a more effective response by law enforcement and the justice system.
